Routine Cleaning

Routine dental exams make for healthy, beautiful smiles and good oral hygiene habits. We want all our patients to have good oral health and encourage parents to bring their children in for regular dental check-ups. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children see a dentist at least every six months, or more often, depending on a child's individual diet and risk.

These visits are an important part of preventing cavities, but they improve children's oral health in many other ways as well. During routine dental check-ups, kids learn the techniques necessary for excellent lifelong oral hygiene. Parents also receive unique, tailored guidance on the best ways to improve their children's oral health through diet, at-home dental hygiene and supplements.

Our whole-body approach to oral health aims to not only improve the beauty and health of your child's smile, but of his or her whole body.

Helping Kids Maintain Excellent Oral Health

At Carrico & Radtke Pediatric Dentistry, we feel that prevention of dental problems is important, especially in children. Regular dental exams are an opportunity for our hygienists and doctors to identify any potential problems before they bloom into severe conditions. The thorough teeth cleaning, polishing and fluoride treatment (for older children) our patients receive during check-ups are an excellent guard against cavities, when performed regularly.

While cavities and gum disease are certainly on our "watch list" of potential problems we look for during each visit, we also explore for abnormal growth which may require orthodontic intervention. Crossbites, uneven spacing and ectopic eruptions are typically easier - and less uncomfortable for the child - to correct when children are young than after they've passed into puberty.

Teaching Children Good Oral Hygiene

Lifelong habits of good oral hygiene begin when children are young. We work closely with our young patients and their parents to help children learn excellent dental hygiene at an early age. Each routine dental exam includes a "refresher course" on proper flossing and tooth brushing techniques explained in a fun, interactive way kids can understand.

Our Routine Pediatric Dental Cleanings Include:

  • A gentle examination of the child's teeth, gums, jaws, head and neck.
  • A thorough cleaning of the mouth and gums, followed by a polish applied to each tooth.
  • An interactive, easy to comprehend review with the child on proper tooth brushing, flossing and overall oral hygiene techniques.
  • A parent consultation outlining the best ways to improve the child's oral health, including tips for at-home oral hygiene, diet and nutrition.
  • A review of any growth abnormalities due to natural growth, injuries or finger-sucking habits, as well as a discussion of solutions via orthodontic treatment.
  • Fluoride treatment to help strengthen teeth.
  • Any radiographs deemed necessary.
